After President Shehu Shagari was elected president in 1979, he asked wealthy businessman and major supporter of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) what he wanted. His reply surprised President Shagari. Mai Deribe said he wanted nothing but to be made a director of Nigeria Airways! And President Shagari obliged him with appointment into the Board of Nigeria Airways.
