Do you know why Audu Bako is regarded as the best governor of Kano state till date?

  1. His physical development of the state remains unmatched
  2. He built the Bagauda Dam, Birnin Kudu Dam and Itiga Dams and let the people have water unlike before, fundamentally changing the mood of the state in the process
  3. He built the Bagauda Dam Hotel, which became a massive tourist attraction
  4. He built these massive developments by direct labour
  5. He offered various scholarships to a huge number of Kano citizens. For example, the likes of Dan Kabo (of Kabo Airlines fame) took advantage of the scholarships and used it as a springboard for later success in life.
  6. He managed a cabinet featuring the likes of Dantata, Yakasai, Kazaure, Maitama Sule, Howeidy and others who brought their brilliance to bear on governance in the state.
  7. He separated his direct labour unit from the civil service because no civil servant could spend more than 5,000 British Pounds without an AIE (Authority to Incure Expenditure) from the Ministry of Finance. He did not want to be bogged down by unnecessary bureaucracy
  8. He strengthened his director labour agency with the recruitment of some Eastern Europeans
  9. He saved a lot of costs on his projects with his approach to governance.
  10. He went back to farming upon retirement, following a policy in the north in those days that top public servants should go into farming upon retirement from service.
