  1. His full name was Herbert Samuel Heelas Macaulay
  2. He was born in 1861, the year Lagos was ceded to Queen Victoria
  3. He was the grandson of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first Anglican Bishop of West Africa
  4. He was educated in England as a civil engineer but abandoned engineering for politics and journalism
