The children wished to see his regret-laden face!

Every time they saw him, he did not demonstrate overwhelming regret in his speech or demeanor. Some of the children thought he was cocky, manipulative and standoffish. How could someone who treated them and their mothers the way he did, never show significant remorse? How could he carry himself as if he did them a huge favour and not the exact opposite? Perhaps they so much wanted to see his repentant face and expression that he resolved not to give them the pleasure. Did the fact that they did not see his regret-laden face equate to him not significantly regretting his action and admitting his wrongs?
