The original Glover Memorial Hall in Lagos built in honour of the First Governor of Lagos, Sir John Howley Glover (1863 – 1872) commenced its hosting of operas and other great events in 1887.

Sir John Glover extended the Marina, built Broad Street and created Glover settlements in Ebute Metta to house refugees from Egbaland during the wars with Dahomey (today’s Benin Republic).
